What We Do
The Spellman Museum of Stamps and Postal History is a treasure trove of philatelic wonders. We feature over 2,000,000 items, including stamps from the collection of General Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Our museum has a vast stamp collection that showcases a representative, worldwide collection, as well as individual items of rarity and curiosity. We also have specialized collections of particular stamps, sets of stamps, or areas of postal history.
We're proud to have a library and resource center on site, making it easy for visitors to delve into the world of philately.
What Is the Goal?
We aim to promote civic competence in K-8 youth by teaching them about their community, nation, and world through philately and stamp collecting.
The National Council for the Social Studies believes that young people with knowledge, skills, and a commitment to democracy are essential for sustaining and improving our democratic way of life.
Teachers face the challenge of keeping students engaged in history, social studies, and geography lessons, and the Spellman Museum offers interactive and hands-on activities to help them do so.
These activities bring social studies and other topics to life with engaging and culturally relevant material, helping teachers enrich the classroom experience beyond core instruction.
The museum's Director of Education uses the collections and exhibits as a classroom, traveling to schools with exhibits and materials to share related lessons using postage stamps to engage students on culturally and socially relevant topics and themes.
