Historical Period

The Hamburg Passenger Lists cover a significant period in history, spanning from 1850 to 1934. This 84-year span saw the rise and fall of emigration through Hamburg, with a notable break during World War I.

The lists are divided into two series: Direct Lists and Indirect Lists. Direct Lists contain the names of passengers who sailed directly to an overseas port, while Indirect Lists include those who proceeded to an intermediate British or European port before continuing their journey.

The Direct Lists extend from 1850 to 1914 and from 1920 to 1934, with the lists for 1850-1855 being extracts from lists arranged alphabetically by surname and then chronologically by departure date. Unfortunately, the volume of extracts for January-June 1853 has been missing since at least the 1920s.

Indirect Lists, on the other hand, cover the period from 1854 to 1910, with the names of passengers for 1850-1854 and from 1911 onwards included in the Direct Lists.

Unfortunately, the original passenger lists were often handwritten, making them prone to errors and inconsistencies.

Fortunately, researchers have access to digitized versions of these lists, making it easier to search and analyze the information.

This digitization has made it possible for researchers to access a vast array of records, including passenger lists from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
